The Blue Ridge City Street/Public Works Department maintains approximately 44 miles of city streets and roads. They are responsible for all street/road maintenance from right of way clearing, road repair, striping, to signage. They are responsible for around 5 miles of sidewalk and curbs maintenance and repairs. In addition, this department is responsible for approximately 3 miles of storm drains and 225 storm catch basins/storm grates. This department is essential during storms acting as first responders to any natural disaster or manmade. They are also FEMA certified in Emergency Management as well as in special events and public safety. The Street/Public works is responsible for all traffic lights and signals in the city. Their scope of work makes them responsible for implementing the “Beautification Project”, Blue Ridge Streetscape, and the coordination of work with all downtown events and festivals.
The downtown merchants, residents, and tourists have seen a visible change in the downtown area and throughout the city. With these positive changes, tourists and residents alike marvel over the new historic look. While out and about with their jobs in the city, this department monitors and keeps an eye out for any problem areas, also involving other departments. They’ve implemented a hotline for residents or tourists to report any concerns.
